How the hiking route planner works
Plan a hiking route by clicking on the map. The planner snaps every point to the nearest path and routes along real waymarked trails, not straight lines. It is free, needs no sign-up, and works in the browser.
-
1
Set the start and destination
Click the Start field, then pick a spot on the map. Do the same for the destination. Drag any point to move it, or click the drawn route to insert a waypoint mid-section.
-
2
Choose how to route
Shortest goes the direct way. Waymarked trails prefers signed hiking paths. Waymarked + via ferrata also allows secured climbing routes, if you are equipped for them.
-
3
Read the route, then take it with you
You get distance, walking time, elevation gain and difficulty per section. Export the result to GPX for your watch or GPS, or send it to the route explorer to see what lies along the way.
What the planner shows you
Trail difficulty on the SAC scale
Every section is coloured by the Swiss Alpine Club scale, from T1 (easy hiking) to T6 (difficult alpine). You can see before you leave whether a route stays on comfortable paths or crosses exposed alpine terrain.
Surface and navigation
The summary flags the worst surface along the route (scree, rock, mud) and the hardest stretch to navigate, so a pathless section does not surprise you on the way.
Map layers
Switch on hiking route networks, protected areas, glaciers and avalanche danger for EAWS regions. The map holds more than 9.8 million points of interest — huts, bivouacs, springs, peaks and via ferratas.
GPX export and import
Download the planned route as a GPX file for a watch, GPS unit or another app. You can also import an existing route from Mapy.com and carry on editing it here.
Frequently asked questions
Is the route planner free?
Yes. Planning, GPX export and all map layers are free and need no sign-up. An account is only needed for gear lists and trips.
Which areas does it cover?
Routing and points of interest cover the European region, with the densest data across the Alps. Trails come from OpenStreetMap, so coverage follows what mappers have recorded there.
What does SAC T3 mean?
T3 is a demanding mountain hike: the path may be exposed, sections can require using your hands, and sure-footedness plus a head for heights are expected. T1 and T2 are ordinary hiking; T4 and above is alpine terrain.
Can I export the route to my watch?
Yes. Export the route as GPX and load the file into Garmin, Suunto, Coros or any app that reads GPX.
Are my routes stored anywhere?
No. The planned route lives in your browser only and is not saved on the server. Reloading the page clears it.
What is the difference between the planner and the route explorer?
The planner draws a route for you. The route explorer takes a finished GPX route and finds what lies along it — huts, water sources, peaks and via ferratas, plus the avalanche forecast.
