What is TrailPack
TrailPack helps you plan gear for your trips, explore what lies along a GPX route and plan a route over a map of points of interest and hiking trails across Europe. The app is free and has no ads.
TrailPack is three tools that share the same data. Each works on its own; together they cover a trip from the first idea to the packed backpack.
Route planner
Draw a route on a topographic map by clicking along waymarked trails. You get distance, walking time, elevation and difficulty per section on the SAC scale, and a GPX export.
Route explorer
Upload a GPX route and see what lies along it — huts, springs, peaks and via ferratas, plus protected areas and the avalanche forecast for the regions you cross.
Gear and trips
Keep your gear in one place with weights, decide what goes on a given trip, and use packing mode to tick items off. You can share a trip with the people coming along.
What is free and what needs an account
The route planner, the route explorer and the map are open to everyone — no sign-up, no limits on how much you plan. An account is only needed for gear lists and trips, because those are saved and follow you between devices; you sign in with Google or Apple, so there is no password to invent.
The whole app is free. There are no ads and no paid tier.
Data and licenses
The map and route explorer are built on open data — OpenStreetMap and many other projects.

The data comes from OpenStreetMap, Refuges.info, CampToCamp, Wikidata and the European avalanche services (EAWS).
It is community-maintained open data, which means coverage is uneven — dense across the Alps, thinner elsewhere, and a hut or spring may be missing or out of date. Treat it as a good starting point for planning, not as a guarantee on the ground.
Who is behind it
TrailPack is developed and operated by MFC Software s.r.o.
The project started as a tool for planning mountain trips and gradually grew into a public app.
It is a side project, not a startup with investors. It is built in the time left over, and it grows in the directions its author actually needs in the mountains.
Ideas and bug reports are welcome through the operator’s website. The route planner also has a “Report a problem” button that sends the current route along with the report.
Where the name came from
You know the feeling: you get to the hut and realise you left the headlamp at home. Next time you have the headlamp, but no spare socks. The time after that it is the charger. Something different every trip, and it always occurs to you once you are already there. I got tired of it — and that is how this app started.
It began as a spreadsheet, and for a while it was called simply “the gear planner”. Then routes, a map and the huts and springs along the way were added, and it was no longer planning just the gear. “Pack” means both the bag and the act of filling it; a “trail” is the way there. TrailPack is both: what you take, and where you carry it.
For AI assistants
TrailPack runs an MCP server, so an assistant like Claude can work with your gear and trips directly — asking what a trip weighs or what you could leave at home.
